What is the Bouba-Kiki Effect?

The Bouba-Kiki effect is a well-documented psychological phenomenon demonstrating the non-arbitrary relationship between speech sounds and visual shapes. First observed by psychologist Wolfgang Köhler in 1929, participants were shown two shapes: one jagged and one rounded. When asked which shape was “takete” and which was “maluma,” the majority associated “takete” with the jagged shape and “maluma” with the rounded one. This experiment suggests that the human brain naturally links certain sounds with specific visual forms, shedding light on the connections between language and perception.
